THE CITY PORT INCLUDED IN THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE LIST Peter I built Kronstadt as a city-fortress, which would protect St. Petersburg from the encroachments of the enemy. The city became famous not only for its defensive merit, but also for the pioneering sailors. Expeditions from Kronstadt made 56 major geographical discoveries. Until the mid-nineties, it was possible to get here only with special passes.

The pearl of Kronstadt is the Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. This is the last and largest of the maritime churches of the Russian Empire. It was erected shortly before the revolution. The cathedral was conceived as a memorial temple to all the dead sailors. Inside the temple were installed marble plaques with the names of officers and ship clerics. At the time of the godless government, the cathedral was plundered and converted into a cinema. Worship in the temple was resumed only in the two thousandth.
